~Muslim Diversity~

Unique Is What We Are; By RUMANA JUZAR

Diversity can be a glue to unite people anywhere, instead of a reason to pigeon-hole them according to stereotypes.

DARK brown eyes. Black hair. Medium brown skin. In people’s eyes I am an Indian. So yes you would think I worship the divine God Krishna or Ganesh. But, there is a but. For I am a follower of the Prophet Mohammed (S.A.W) & his waasi Ali Ibne Abitalib ~  Islam is my religion.

For many of us with our straight-laced conventional thinking, if you are an Indian, you are automatically labeled a Hindu. As an example, take me. I am a Gujarati from the North Indian sect. That is my race. But I follow the teachings of Allah. And that is my religion.

So when people ask me what I am exactly, I confidently reply that I’m a Gujarati-Muslim. To be even more specific, a Dawoodi Bohra. That is my unique identity.

The frustration of being pigeon-holed in the stereotypical context of Malaysian society is what I’ve had to endure my whole life, living in Malaysia. Even though it is a peaceful country that boasts a myriad of cultures and religions, her citizens are still very much ignorant when it comes to the subject of diversity.

Throughout my school life, schoolmates were puzzled by my origins. I had to endure the torture of being stared at and scrutinized a fascinating object of gossip during assembly. I can still remember the quiet whispers by some tudung-clad students: “Budak tu India, buat apa dia berdoa? Islam ke dia?” (She’s Indian. Why is she praying? Is she a Muslim?)
That was why during assembly, the ritual of the dua recital was a truly painful experience for me. I was scared to even lift my hands as I hated the curious stares and whispers.

My hands in prayer always looked small and clenched; it was as if I was ashamed of who I was. So I resolved to go to great lengths to make my teachers and fellow classmates understand the truth of my individuality.
My struggle for my identity did not end there. However, I had a different experience when I entered university. During my bachelor degree years in a UK campus here in Malaysia, I was mostly in an international environment. I was not so much an “alien” then as everyone was unique.
There were Muslims from different branches of the faith from India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Kenya, Tanzania and other nations. There were many Indonesian Chinese, Africans and South Asians. I hardly got inquisitive questions from them.

But of course, when it came to some of my fellow Malaysians, I had to wipe off the puzzled looks on their faces when they found out that I am a Muslim, and why I do not speak Tamil.

The best time I had when it came to celebrating diversity was during my one year in Britain, when I was doing my masters. There, I met people from one end of the world to the other. It was an amazing experience, being part of the richly diverse potpourri I was placed in.

I had great friends from other Gujarati-Muslim groups. One of my closest friends is an Orthodox Christian Romanian named Ana. I met intriguing and eccentric Iranians. The South Americans were a nice lot.

My classmates were a real colorful group originating from Nigeria, Russia, India, Germany, and so on. I cherished the melting pot of cultures immensely, as the diversity was like a breath of fresh air after being “enclosed” for so long.

The “wonder year” came to an end as my carefree student days morphed into the responsibility of working life. I returned to Malaysia, and the demons of my identity came back to haunt me. Again I was the subject of confusion and ignorant questions.

I was greeted with surprised glances when it became known I am a Muslim. Colleagues often infuriated me by asking: “So if you’re Muslim, that means your parents converted? Is your mother or father Malay?”
And again I had to explain the “origins of my species”. I would start with the early history of how the Aryans conquered India from the Dravidians; of how, probably, my ancestors embraced Islam even before its influences reached the Malay archipelago, up to the time my father of Indian nationality married my mother and settled here.

There is a wide ground of stereotypical perceptions and misunderstanding of culture and religion in this nation, as well as others. The sole cause of this? Pure ignorance.

However, narrow-mindedness is also an advocate. People need to open their eyes, minds and hearts to embrace the differences in the world. They need to educate themselves. If not, how will they grow as individuals, as a society and as a nation?

That said, I cherish my identity whole-heartedly. I could never say that I am, or be, someone I’m not. From my experience, there are many individuals who do not express who they really are. For instance, a long time ago, my own brother once agreed that he was a mamak (Indian Muslim) when asked whether he was truly Muslim. Today, I’m happy that he is confident about his uniqueness.

People should be aware of who they are, and others around them, and not hide in the dark for fear of how the world might judge them.
In the end, our identity is what belongs only to us. It is the only thing that can distinguish us from others. So let’s look deep inside and appreciate who we are and who others are.

~Yummy Soft Rotis / Phulka~

Roti/Phulka – Indian Flat Bread

Phulka (Fulka) or Roti is an unleavened flat-bread from South Asia and a staple diet in many homes in India.  Rotis are made from whole wheat flour dough which is rolled and cooked on a skillet and then over direct heat where it is puffed up.  Roti is generally served with dal/pappu and with so many other curries (veg and non-veg). You can also spread some butter or ghee/clarified butter which is optional. When you cook on electric stove, a metal mesh is used since the coil is not suitable. If it is gas stove you can cook the rotis over direct heat. The metal mesh is generally available in the local Indian stores in the U.S.
I do not use any oil for making rotis and it stays soft. You can roll up the remaining rotis in an aluminum foil or cling wraps and store it for a day or two in refrigerator and reheat before serving. You can also store the dough in a ziplock cover or cling wrap it and refrigerate it for upto 2 to 3 days. Bring the dough back to room temperature before making rotis.
Ingredients:
  • Whole wheat flour/atta – 1 cup
  • Water – 1 cup
  • Salt to taste (1/4 to 1/2 tsp)
Method of Preparation:

  1. Add a cup of flour to a mixing bowl and add salt.
  2. Mix well. Add water a little at a time and keep mixing until flour absorbs water and forms a dough.
  3. If it is sticky sprinkle some more flour and knead until a pliable soft dough is formed. The more you knead the more softer rotis are.
  4. Dust your palms with dough to avoid sticking while kneading. You can also grease your palms with oil.
  5. Cover the dough with a moist or wet cloth and let it rest for half an hour.  You can also use the dough immediately if you are in a hurry.
  6. After half an hour, make golf size or small lemon size balls of equal size.
  7. Take a ball, flatten it and dust it with flour. Roll it into a thin, round shape roti using a rolling pin on a flat surface or a wooden block.
  8. Dust with more flour while rolling if sticks to the surface.
  9. Meanwhile heat a flat skillet or a pan and add the rolled roti.
Cooking with coil (or electric stove):
Turn on stove over medium high and place a metal mesh which is used for making rotis.

Transfer rolled roti to the skillet.

When you see small bubbles flip it and let the other side bubble up.

Now transfer the roti to the mesh and let it puff up. Flip it and let the other side cook. Roti is ready.

Cooking with gas stove:
Place the rolled roti in a hot skillet. When you see small bubbles flip it and let the other side bubble up. Now transfer the roti to direct flame using a pair of tongs. It balloons up cooking the inside of the roti. Flip the roti using tongs and let the other side cook. The whole process take about 5 to 10 seconds. Some of the rotis may not puff up due to small holes. But do not worry. Just follow the same procedure and it will be cooked.

Spread some butter or ghee/clarified butter as soon as you remove from heat. This is totally optional.

~Despair~

Despair is not for the believers…
But it comes to all humans to test your strength in your belief.
One of the most inspiring verses in the Quran, and one that always enters our mind whenever our brain tells you..
“it’s impossible!”
is Prophet Ya’qoob’s words to his sons after they
despaired of rescuing their captured brother:
Do not despair of God’s mercy, for indeed none
despair of God’s mercy other than
disbelieving people. [12:87]
This verse teaches us to never lose hope.
God has the power to get us out of any trouble we could possibly get into. All that’s needed is to stay steadfast
on our path, to always stay close to God,
for as He says:
And whoever has taqwa (stays constantly mindful of God), God will create for him a way out,
and He will provide for him from sources he never expected.
And whoever puts all his reliance on God,
then God is all that he needs. [65:2,3]
What a wonderful promise to the believers!

~Motherly Love~

A mother (97 years old) in China, feeding and taking care of her paralysed son (60 years old) everyday for more than 19 years.
A reminder of the amazing spirit of human compassion and more importantly, motherly love.

A mother’s joy begins when new life is stirring inside;
when a tiny heartbeat is heard for the very first time,
and a playful kick reminds her that she is never alone.

~Story of Adam (A.S) /Creation of Hawwa (Eve)- Part 2~

●▬▬●▬▬● The Story of Adam ( part 2 ) ●▬▬●▬▬●
——— Creation of Eve, First Women —

Eve is Hawwa in Arabic; it comes from the root word hay, meaning living. Eve is also an English variant of the old Hebrew word Havva, also deriving from hay. Adam informed the Angels that Eve was so named because she was made from a part of him and he, Adam, was a living being.

Eve was created while Adam was sleeping from his shortest left rib Both Jewish and Christian traditions also maintain that Eve was created from Adam’s rib, although in a literal translation of the Jewish tradition, rib is sometimes referred to as side.

Adam opened his eyes and looked into the beautiful face of a woman gazing down at him. Adam was surprised and asked the woman why she had been created. She revealed that she was to ease his loneliness and bring tranquillity to him. The Angels questioned Adam. They knew that Adam possessed knowledge of things they did not know about and the knowledge mankind would need to occupy the earth. They said ‘who is this?’ and Adam replied ‘this is Hawwa (Eve)’.

Lord Said : “O Adam! Dwell you and your wife in Paradise, and eat thereof as you both wish, but approach not this tree otherwise you both will be of the Zalimun (unjust and wrong-doers) Adam and his wife Eve were enjoying each others company and carefully avoiding that specific prohibited tree. Iblis became very jealous when he saw the favors of The Almighty on the Prophet Adam and began to devise ways and means to humiliate them.

Iblis made numerous attempts to misguide them Then Shaitan (Satan) whispered to him, saying : “O Adam! Shall I lead you to the Tree of Eternity and to a kingdom that will never waste away?”
They were also warned of the power of evil Finally, Iblis Satan succeeded in his mission and made them approach that specific tree,Adam and Eve followed the temptations of Iblis and were deprived of the heavenly bliss.

Then they both ate of the tree, and so their private parts appeared to them, and they began to stick on themselves the leaves from Paradise for their covering. Thus did Adam disobey his Lord, so he went astray.
Lord called to them, “Did I not forbid you from that tree and tell you that Satan is to you a clear enemy?
They requested The Almighty to forgive them by following supplications
They said, “Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, indeed we (both) will definitely be among the losers.”

Lord said:” Descend from Paradise, both of you, together, some of you are an enemy to some others. Then if there comes to you guidance from Me, then whoever follows My Guidance shall neither go astray, nor fall into distress and misery. Therein you will live, and therein you will die, and from it you will be brought forth.” And those who disbelieve and deny Our signs - those will be companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally.”

Lord said: ‘O Mankind! Be dutiful to your Lord, Who created you from a single person (Adam) and from Him (Adam) He created his wife (Eve), and from them both He created many men and women.

And Allah knows best...

~Story of Adam (A.S) - Part 1~

●▬▬▬● The Story of Adam ( part 1 ) The First Man ●▬▬▬●

Creator created Adam from a handful of soil containing portions from all its varieties on Earth. Angels were sent to earth to collect the soil It was red, white, brown, and black; it was soft and malleable, hard and gritty; it came from the mountains and the valleys; from infertile deserts and lush fertile plains and all the natural varieties in between. The finest were was the soil from Madina where the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) was to live.  The descendants of Adam were destined to be as diverse as the handful of soil from which their ancestor was created; all have different appearances, attributes and qualities.

And Creator said to the angels ~
“Verily, I am going to place (mankind) generations after generations on earth.” They said: “Will You place therein those who will make mischief therein and shed blood, - while we glorify You with praises and thanks (Exalted be You above all that they associate with You as partners) and sanctify You.” He ( Creator) said: “I know that which you do not know.”

Creator taught Adam all the knowledge(names of everything) , then He showed them to the angels and said, “Tell Me the names of these if you are truthful.”

Angels said: “Glory be to You, we have no knowledge except what you have taught us. Verily, it is You, the All-Knower, the All-Wise.”

Creator said: “O Adam! Inform them of their names,” and when he had informed them of their names, He said: “Did I not tell you that I know the (unseen) in the heavens and the earth, and I know what you reveal and what you have been concealing?”

Creator said to the angels: “Prostrate yourselves to Adam.” So the angels prostrated - all of them entirely, except Iblis (Who is Jinn created aforetime from the smokeless flame of fire), He was proud and said: “Shall I prostrate to one whom You created from clay?”

Creator said : “O Iblis (Jinn)! What prevents you from prostrating yourself to one whom I have created with Both My Hands. Are you too proud (to fall prostrate to Adam) or are you one of the high exalted?”

Iblis (Jinn) said : “Never would I prostrate to a human whom You created out of clay from an altered black mud.” “I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay.”

Creator said : “Then get out from here, for indeed, you are expelled.
“And verily, the curse shall be upon you till the the Day of Resurrection.”

Iblis (Jinn) said : “See? This one whom You have honoured above me, if You give me respite (keep me alive) to the Day of Resurrection, I will surely seize and mislead his offspring (by sending them astray) all but a except, among them, Your chosen servants.”

Creator said : “The Truth is, and the Truth I say, I will surely fill Hell with you and those of them that follow you all together.”

Iblis (Jinn) said : “Because You have put me in error, I will surely sit in wait for them on Your straight path, I will come to them from before them and from behind them and on their right and on their left, and You will not find most of them grateful [to You].”

Creator said : “Get out of Paradise, reproached and expelled.

~The Rescuing Hug~

This picture is from an article called “The Rescuing Hug”.

The article details the first week of life of a set of twins.
Each were in their respective incubators and one was not expected to live.
A hospital nurse fought against the hospital rules and placed the babies in one incubator.
When they were placed together, the healthier of the two,
threw an arm over her sister in an endearing embrace.
The smaller baby’s heart stabilized and temperature rose to normal.

Life is so beautiful ~ Creation by Allah!!

~Tears~

"Every single thing has a measure or a weight, except for tears; for one drop of them can extinguish seas of Fire. If an eye is filled with tears, the face will never be burdened with neediness or humiliation; and if it floods with tears then Allah will make it unlawful for the Fire to touch it.

Mufaddal (ra) asked “My Lord, what is the reward of tears?” Imam Sadiq (as) replied “Uncountable reward if its for right (of Ahlulbayt)” Mufaddal (ra) said “O Son of The Messenger of Allah, your Day of Retribution (Ashura) is the greatest Day of plight” Imam Sadiq replied (as) “No, not our plight in Karbala, but the day of Al-Saqifa and burning the door on Ali, Hasan, Hussain, Fatima Zainab, Um Kulsoom, Fizza and killing Mohsin by kick is greater with more grief and sorrow, because its the origin of the Day of Torment”
Indeed, if a teary man cries for a community, they all receive mercy."- Imam Jaf’ar as-Sadiq (A.S)

Don’t be ashamed to weep; ‘tis right to grieve. Tears are only water, and flowers, trees, and fruit cannot grow without water. But there must be sunlight also. A wounded heart will heal in time, and when it does, the memory and love of our lost ones is sealed inside to comfort us.”
Weeping for Fear of Allah

Abu Hurairah (Radia-Allaahu ‘anhu) said: “When verses of Surat an NAjm were revealed,(53:59-60)

‘Do you then wonder at this recital (the Quran)? And you laugh at it and weep not,’

The people of Saffa wept till their tears overflowed on their cheeks. When the Prophet (Salla-Allaahu alaihi wa sallam) heard them weeping, he wept with them, and so did all the other companions. The Prophet (Salla-Allaahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “The person who shed tears on account of fear of Allah, will not go to Hell till the milk returns into the breasts (that it is impossible).”

Alhamdullilah

Alhamdullilah

Say Alhamdullilah

Whatever happens is by the Will of Allah, whether it be good or bad. Sometimes we forget Allah when it comes to happy moments, but immediately turn to Him for the bad. We should always be thanking Allah (SWT) for His infinite blessings, even in the tough times. He still gives and gives and we don’t even ask. The mercy of our Lord is beyond.. Subhna’Allah. “Its better a calamity that turns you to Allah, than a blessing that makes you forget Allah”
Always say Alhamdulillah for everything….
